Ooh Baby Baby (resophonic Karaoke)

3:24 minutes (4.67 MB)

I was playing around with a solo arrangement of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles melodic soul classic "Ooh Baby Baby." I'd never tried to play a Soul or R&B tune on Dobro before. I couldn't quite to get the 12/8 pulse I wanted playing solo so just for a fun experiment, I bought a 1.99 karaoke track to play with. This is the result. It'd probably work even better with the sustain of a lap steel but I wanted to see what I could get out of the resonator first.

Orville Johnson-Gravy Waltz

3:04 minutes (2.82 MB)

This number is a jazz waltz written by Ray Brown and Steve Allen. i'm thinking about adding this one to my jazz curriculum for this year's ResoSummit. It's fun to play and not too hard once you grasp the feel of the jazz waltz timing. I played everything, programmed the drums, guernsey dobro.

Here's a great tuning that I found Ferrell Stowe is also a big fan of: Low to high: CGCGCD

Here's one of the Claw - Dobro duets (you have to wait a bit for the 'bro to come in).

The CDs should arrive in a few weeks - pretty excited about this one!

Chris Coole and Ivan Rosenberg "Carolyn Sanaskol" - w/resophonic banjo

3:42 minutes (3.4 MB)

Hey all - finally a banjo you don't have to make fun of! This song is from my upcoming release with Chris Coole from Toronto. I'm playing clawhammer on my new Rayco "ResNik" resophonic banjo (with a full dobro-style cone/spider assembly nicely worked into a banjo-shaped body), Chris is on guitar, and that's John Reischman on mandolin....

The album is called "Farewell Trion" and has mostly me on Dobro (and banjo on 3 songs) with Chris on vocals and clawhammer banjo or sometimes guitar - so it's primarily a clawhammer - dobro duet album (one of my favorite unlikely combos). I'll post one of the banjo/dobro numbers in a bit....
